Hi everyone,
I have been in the USA for a few months now. Could you help me know how you perform the havan here? Ah- It used to be so easy back in India where there were neem and peepal trees everywhere and no smoke detectors...Good Ol'Days
1. Where do you source your samidhas from? What are the natural woods here that are suited for havan? I stayed on the east coast,( saw many pines there) and now am in California, any local info will be of great help.
2. What do you do to your smoke alarm to enable a vighna-free havan?
3. When do you schedule the sandhya and havan? the days seem so long in summer here - especially as I came from India recently- the sun didnt go down even by 8.00 pm in the northern USA. (I guess I am a bit away from the Land of the midnight sun but I was wondering how Sandhya schedules apply there?)

For samidhas in the west, you can use any of the following:
- vansh - oak
- pipal - banyan
- polash - maple
- damar - fig
- aam - mango
- boddh - "bo tree", (ficus religiosa)
- sal - (shorea robusta)
- chir - pine or long leaf pine (pinus roxburghii sargent)
- vilva bel - (aegle marmelos)
I also know of people who use cherrywood.

Like Prabhat said, take out the batteries if possible. Some alarms also have an adjustable setting. Also, it's a good idea to have at least one window open to aid in the circulation of fresh air.

Sandhya should be performed once before sunrise and once after sunset. Agnihotra should be performed once or twice in the interval period, i.e. at least once after sunrise amd optionally also before sunset. If you choose to perform it only once a day, then you will need to recite both the morning and evening mantras in the morning. _________________ Namaste,

Thank you so much for that information. You are a life saver.
Just wanted to know how do we decide which trees are suitable for samidhas?
Our ancient sages may have talked about the medicinal herbs and trees in the East. So are we in an ongoing process here learning about the flora here and its suitability to Agnihotra?
Do you think the Scandinavian countries might be more into such research because they have similar traditions? |

Namaste Prabhat,
Well there were a lot of figs and plentiful samidhas in California. I have a l'il
havan kund. I think it might be the tiniest you have ever seen. ( I will try to upload it in the thread Shishya started).
Yes , my havans went vighna free in Cal. No alarms set off. Removed them totally for the duration of the havan.
Now I am in Chicago. Hope to find pines here for samidhas and have to try and make the ghee from butter the way Shishya told.
Thanks everyone. _________________ Namaste

Namaste Mitra,
We have one other member from the Chicago area that I know of: Opankis. But they haven't posted anything yet, so I don't know anything about them. However, perhaps you could use the e-mail function through the forum here to get in touch. You should be able to use the following link:
