http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashwamedha

There are supposed verses from the Vedas that are pretty nasty and disgusting.

When I read stuff like this, it makes me lose all faith in the scriptures. And it makes me lose all faith in the religion altogether.

The article says that people have tried to omit such verses from Vedas.

Can someone tell me what Swami Dayananda said about the Vedic verses mentioned in this article?

Namaste Ayush,

You haven't read the articles by B. D. Ukhul yet, have you? He discusses this topic at length...

The article is being managed by a freak with whom I debated at lengths for saying itihaasa speak of horse killing cum mock coitus kinda crap (in the talk page, my name is Leafy). Lucky I got hold of the manusmrti article, but this one is out of my hands. Know this, that the vedic mantras are easy to be interpreted in one's own fashion. 'agni' is interpreted as fire and 'ashva' as horse. These are only one of its meanings in vedic sanskrit..

What according to you are the Vedas referring to by "Agni" and "Ashva"?

EDIT : I'll read the article by B. D. Ukhul as soon as possible.

Not me, but vedic sanskrit and nairukta explain 'agni' as energy - something vibrant and dynamic. The word 'ashva' also means the like and thus was associated with horses. However, ashva also means fire.

Namaste,

Agni- it has been given a place as one of the elements of matter in vedas and even in science. It has been defined in the same way in either of the sciences(ie vedas & basic sciences) a part of that agni is defined as a state of matter which is pure and is used to destroy the impure things that is what said about agni in rigveda.

So is an ASHVA just as agni both are difficult to control and meant for the same purpose in different states.
