Namaste,

On my trip, I will be taking my laptop with me. (I know, I'm addicted. Laughing) If the opportunity presents itself, (and it probably will) I will continue work on my translation of the Samkhya Darshana. Below, I have a sample of my work thus far. My question to you is:

Would you find this kind of tranlation useful?

सांख्य दर्शनम्

First Book

अथ त्रिविधदुःखात्यन्तनिवृत्तिरत्यन्तपुरुषार्थः ।१।
atha trividhaduHkhAtyantanivRuttiratyantapuruShArthaH |1|
I:1 atha trividhaduhkhaatyantanivrittiratyantapurushaarthah

atha - now; trividha - of three kinds; duhkha - suffering; atyanta - complete, final; nivrittir - end, cessation; atyanta - complete, final; purushaartha - the goal of man's existence.

I.1 Now begins our discourse upon the complete cessation of the three kinds of suffering and the final goal of man's existence.

न दृष्टात्तत्सिद्धिर्निवृत्तेरप्यनुवृत्तिदर्शनात् ।२।
na dRuShTAttatsiddhirnivRutterapyanuvRuttidarshanAt |2|
I.2 na drishtaattatsiddhirnivritterapyanivrittidarshanaat

na - not; drishtaat - perceptible, manifest; tat - that; siddhir - succeed, accomplish; nivritti - end, cessation; arapya - unaltered, undiminished; nivritti - end, cessation; darshanaat - apparent, visibly evidenced.

I.2 This cessation is not to be accomplished through that which is manifest, for it is apparent that suffering thusly remedied returns undiminished.

प्रात्यहिकक्षुत्प्रतीकारवत्तत्प्रतीकारचेष्टनात्पुरुषार्थत्वम् ।३।
prAtyahikakShutpratIkAravattatpratIkAraceShTanAtpuruShArthatvam |3|
I.3 praatyahikakshutpratiikaaravattatpratiikaaraceshtanaatpurushaarthatvam

praatyahika - daily; kshut - hunger; pratikaara - remedy, satisfaction; vat - as with; tat - that; pratikaara - remedy, satisfaction; cheshtanaat - undertake, exert; purushaartha - the goal of man's existence.

I.3 One may argue: Manifest means, such as those used to satisfy daily hunger, can be made use of to satisfy the goal of man's existence.

सर्वासम्भवात्सम्भवेऽपि सत्त्वासम्भवाद्धेयः प्रमाणकुशलैः ।४।
sarvAsambhavAtsambhave&pi sattvAsambhavAddheyaH pramANakushalaiH |4|
I.4 sarvaasambhavaatsambhave'pi sattvaasambhavaaddheyah pramaanakushalaih

sarvaa - all, every; sambhavaat - possibile, available; sambhava - possibility, availability; api - in addition, also, further; sattva - goodness, wholeness, perfection; asambhavaad - impossibile; dheyah - use, apply; pramaana - proof; kushalaih - skilled in, expedient in.

I.4 Reply: Yet, such means would need to be available in all cases. Also, even if this were possible, it would be impossible to apply them with perfection. Thus respond those skilled in proofs.

उत्कर्षदपि मोक्षस्य सर्वोत्कर्षश्रुतोः ।५।
utkarShadapi mokShasya sarvotkarShaSrutoH |5|
I.5 utkarshadapi mokshasya sarvotkarshashrutoh

utkarshad - preeminent, superior; api - in addition, also, further; moksha - liberation, salvation; sarvaa - all, every; utkarsha - preeminence, superiority; shrutoh - in holy scriptures.

I.5 Further, liberation is supreme above all else, and this supremacy is declared in the holy scriptures.

By the way, I've just checked and you will have to view this page with Internet Explorer in order to see the Devanagari with the correct conjuncts/ligatures.

Hmm...that's strange. I can see the IAST with FireFox, but not with Internet Explorer. Which browser are you using, PD?

Yea i can see it this time.
The reason for IE is because windows doesn't support some of the IAST letters. Firefox renders it manually i think.

Can you please check those letters in opera 9? I'm not at my base PC or laptop right now >.<

Namaste PD,

I'm still seeing problems. Opera renders the IAST fine, but the Devanagari is not quite right. It's the same as with FireFox...

I am considering the following solution. For posts on the forum, I will use the format I have used up to this point. However, in the future I will also create downloadable files of the documents which are currently being written in IAST. How does that sound?

With that aside, how about my original question in this thread:

Would you find this kind of translation useful?

Try using Tahoma fonts for all browsers for IAST.

Tahoma can enable reading all IAST letters except chandrabimba as depicted in URW Palladio.

Default fonts like verdana, arial are weak reading IAST

Namaste,

Well, looks like Internet Explorer fixed the IAST problem with version 7.0...kind of. I can now read the script fine, though it looks a little rough. Oh, well. At least it's a step in the right direction. Laughing

Namaste Arun,

I don't know of any site containing good translations of all the darshana sutras. The one PD linked to is better than most, though. My dream is to publish reliable tranlsations through the forum. I have been working on a translation of the Nyaaya for a few months now. At this rate, it would take several years to translate all 6 of them. Confused
