|
|
from wikipedia :
>The Itihasa-Purana is mentioned in the Chandogya Upanishad.[6] There are also references to the Puranas in the Atharvaveda 11.7.24 and the Satapatha Brahmana 11.5.6.8. and 13.4.3.13.[7] There are probably also references to the Itihasa in the Nirukta.[8] The Itihasa-Purana was considered to be almost as sacred and ancient as the Vedas, i.e. the "fifth Veda" according to the Brihad-aranyaka Upanishad.[9] However, the ancient Itihasa-Purana was probably not exactly the same as the text of the Puranas that we know today. Scholars argue that some contents of the Puranas may date to an earlier period.[10]
"The Rg, Sama, Yajur and Atharva became manifest from the Lord, along with the Puranas and all the Devas residing in the heavens." (Atharva Veda 11.7.24)
Is this translation correct? |

Puranas and Itihasa are some of the names given to Brahmanas.
All incidents of itihasa happen after chandogya upanisad. Puraanas were written in kali yuga, again after chandogya upanisad.
I cannot comment much upon atharva veda. There are two recensions, one is by angirasa and the other is not. I think upto 10 kandas is it by angirasa, but this one is 11th kanda. _________________
